I Fuochi di Capodanno

Vi abbiamo parlato nei precedenti articoli di alcune delle più rinomate tradizioni Natalizie che contraddistinguono Napoli ed i napoletani attirando turisti da ogni parte del mondo. Anche quest’anno si terranno, allo scoccare della mezzanotte, i pirotecnici fuochi d’artificio per benaugurare l’anno nuovo che comincia.

Le peculiarità dei fuochi della mezzanotte non sono esclusivi solo di una parte di Napoli ma in tutta la città e nella sua provincia si possono ammirare fuochi che lasciano a bocca aperta, se poi vengono sparati per tutto il lungomare e dal Castel Dell’Ovo, con uno sfondo così allora diventa davvero una cartolina live da non perdere.

In tantissime famiglie napoletane la mezzanotte diventa anche un motivo dello stare insieme per ammirare e chi ne ha voglia far esplodere dei fuochi d’artificio davvero belli. Tradizioni culinarie del Natale Napoletano

L’atmosfera Natalizia a Napoli è sempre stata contornata da suoni, sapori, odori che rendono sempre armoniche le tradizioni che ogni anno come un rito si ripropongono ed ogni volta hanno un sapore diverso.

Abbiamo visto la scorsa volta, una tradizione che attira non solo i napoletani ma turisti da tutto il mondo è andare in Via San Gregorio Armeno per il Presepe Napoletano e ricercare il proprio pastore o cominciare a costruire il proprio Presepe. Oggi vogliamo farvi un breve elenco di alcuni piatti tipici di questo periodo di festività.

Come da tradizione la Vigilia del Natale è contraddistinta da una cena basata da piatti di pesce e verdure, oltre che dolci per sugellare un lauto primo pasto Natalizio. La notte tra il 23 ed il 24 Dicembre le pescherie sono super affollate dai napoletani per non farsi sfuggire pesce fresco e di sapori davvero sublimi. Ecco che troviamo sulle tavole dai frutti di mare crudi a quelli cotti, dagli spaghetti alle vongole a primi di ogni genere a base di pesce o frutti di mare, baccalà, anguille, capitoni, aragoste, contorni vari come “e vrucculill”(broccoli di natale tipici di Napoli) oppure l’insalata di rinforzo per poi finire con la frutta secca ed i dolci che saranno sempre presenti in tutte e tre le giornate dalla Vigilia a Santo Stefano. E come non ricordare l’immancabile agnello(al forno, alla brace o come si preferisce), la minestra maritata, gallina in brodo, carni varie alla brace. Insomma dalla Vigilia a Santo Stefano le pietanze tradizionali sono tanti ed ogni anno ci si ingegna per come cucinarle in modo innovativo.

Una parentesi particolare la meritano i dolci tipici del Natale napoletano, come non citare i roccocò dolci che sono duri per natura e quando son freschi sono durissimi e quando morbidi allora sono già vecchi; volendo scherzare potremmo dire che è un dolce di cazzimma perché è talmente duro che può farti male ad un dente ahahahhaha. Immancabili gli struffoli con il miele che li avvolge ed i confetti che li contornano si fanno mangiare uno dietro l’altro. E come non citare altri dolci come i mustacciuoli od i susamielli. Ce ne per tutti i gusti e palati.

Culinary traditions of the Neapolitan Christmas

‘O Presepe, simbologia e tradizione

Oggi vogliamo parlarvi di uno dei simboli del Natale Napoletano famoso in tutto il mondo, per la sua storia, tradizione e simbologia.

La storia narra che il primo a riscostruire la scena della natività di Cristo fu San Francesco d’Assisi dopo aver ottenuto l'autorizzazione da Papa Onorio III. Francesco, dopo essere tornato dalla Palestina nel 1220 ed essere rimasto colpito dalla visita a Betlemme, intendeva rievocare la scena della Natività in modo tangibile. Da allora fu un crescendo di riproposizioni in varie parti d’Italia.

E’ a partire dal Cinquecento che il Presepe trova a Napoli una ricchezza di artigiani e cultori tali da farlo diffondere in tutto il mondo con una via dedicata, Via San Gregorio Armeno. La strada degli artigiani del Presepe è nota per la ricchezza di botteghe dedicate a quest’arte che permettono al visitatore di rivivere l’atmosfera Natalizia durante tutto l’anno.

Come tradizione vuole, in questo periodo, Via San Gregorio Armeno, è assalita dai visitatori che desiderano costruire o ampliare il proprio Presepe respirando e vivendo l’aria del Natale.

Today, we want to talk about Neapolitan Christmas symbol famous all around the world, for its history, tradition and symbology.

The history says us that the first person who build ‘O Presepe was San Francesco of Assisi after he got the permission from Pope Onorio III. Francesco, when came back from Palestina in the 1220^th and he was affected from his Bethlehem visit, he desire to reproduce the events of Nativity. Since that moment ‘O Presepe  became famous in various places of Italy.

From the Sixteen^th century, ‘O Presepe found in Naples a wealth of artisans and expert who made it famous in all around the world with dedicated street, Via San Gregorio Armeno. The street of the ‘O Presepe artisans is known because there are a lot of workshop to let to visitors to live the Christmas experience during all the year.

As tradition require, in this period, in the Via San Gregorio Armeno there are a lot of visitors who desire to build or extend their ‘O Presepe, living and breathing the air of the Christmas.

‘O Presepe is one of Neapolitan Christmas symbols and it symbolizes also the family. During the Christmas period Neapolitan families meet and live theirselves to enjoy.

Le carte napoletane durante il Regno Borbonico

Vi abbiamo già parlato delle carte napoletane, del loro utilizzo nel cinema e delle loro caratteristiche, oggi vogliamo parlarvi della loro storia e della loro diffusione nel periodo Borbonico (1734-1805).

Fu questo il periodo di massima diffusione delle carte da gioco che la corona decise, a causa della continua necessità di denaro contante, di assegnarne in appalto la gestione della vendita e delle riscossioni delle imposte dietro versamento anticipato del corrispondente importo del fitto.

Si pensi che nel 1748, il fitto annuo era di 8.640 ducati per la vendita di 100.000 mazzi di carte, di cui, come abbiamo detto, 58.000 destinati al Regno e 42.000 per la sola città di Napoli.

Gli arredatori (dallo spagnolo arredare=appaltare) erano le persone incaricate alla riscossione dei tributi. Oltre all'esazione dell'imposta gestivano anche la vendita delle carte da gioco mediante una rete di subappaltatori, e, ne controllavano la produzione. Chiunque producesse carte da gioco doveva essere autorizzato dall'arrendatore e, ogni mazzo di carte, per non essere considerato di contrabbando, doveva portare un bollo a conferma dell'avvenuto pagamento del dazio.

La produzione delle carte da gioco era consentita solo nella città di Napoli ed era affidata alla cosiddetta Arte dei Cartari, la corporazione dei fabbricanti carte da gioco. Il contrabbando era perseguito severamente.

 Nel 1753 a causa di una legge contro i giochi, si ebbe un notevole calo delle vendite e, senza appaltatori disponibili, la gestione dell’appalto tornò a essere dello stato.

Vent’anni dopo, nel 1774, pagando un fitto di 13.413 ducati subentrò un appaltatore privato.

Da quel momento in poi, fino alla fine del Regno Borbonico il business delle carte da gioco rimase in mano ai privati e il continuo aumento del fitto dimostra quanto, senza leggi severe contro il gioco, fosse remunerativo.

Neapolitan Cards during Bourbon Kingdom

We have spoken about Neapolitan cards, their role in film and their features, today, we would like to speak about their history and diffusion during Bourbon Kingdom (1734-1805).

This was the period of maximum spread of the game, during which the Kingdom decided to award the management of the sales and taxes of playing cards in the face of the advance payment of the rent, because of its need of cash.

In 1748 the annual rent was 8.640 ducati for the sale of 100.000 decks of playing cards, of which, as we wrote on previous post, 58.000 for the entire Kingdom and 42.000 for Naples only.

The arredatori (from Spanish arredare=to subcontract) where people who managed taxes collection.  Beyond that, they were managing the sale of playing cards, through a sales network, and controlling their production. The ones who produced playing cards should be authorized by the arredatore and every deck should feature a stamp to demonstrate the payment of the rent.

Their production of playing cards was allowed only in Napoles and was assigned to the Arte dei Cartari, the association of playing cards artisans.

In 1753 because a law against games, there was a huge drop of sales and, with no contractors available, the management of the contract came back to Kingdom.

Twenty years later, in 1774, with an annual rent of 13.413 ducati a new private contractor arrived.

Since then until the end of Bourbon Kingdom the playing cards business has remained private and the continuous grow of the rent has demonstrated how much, without laws against game, it was profitable.

‘O curniciello, il corno portafortuna

Il rapporto tra i napoletani e la superstizione lo racconta bene una frase del grande Eduardo de Filippo: Essere superstiziosi è da ignoranti, ma non esserlo porta male e ce lo dimostra il fatto che l’oggetto scaramantico per eccellenza sia di origini napoletane!

La convinzione che ‘o curniciello porti fortuna risale all’epoca preistorica, quando l’uomo primitivo associava la potenza fisica degli animali alla grandezza delle loro corna.

Le corna erano ritenute sia emblema di potere sia di appartenenza e discendenza divina e per secoli, famosi condottieri (tra essi Alessandro Magno) si fecero raffigurare con questi ornamenti in testa.

La gente comune, ammaliata da tali guerrieri investiti di potenza pseudo-divina, iniziò a costruirsi piccoli amuleti a forma di corna o di unico corno, fabbricandoli con materiali poveri quali il legno o la terracotta.

Con il trascorrere dei secoli divennero piccoli feticci del buon augurio e proprio In Italia comparve il primo cornetto rosso.
Nel Medioevo questi talismani si diffusero in tutta Europa e i gioiellieri napoletani erano celebri per la creazione di collane e braccialetti ornati da innumerevoli cornetti del buon augurio.

Per essere efficace deve essere Tuosto, stuorto e cu ‘a ponta (rigido, sinuoso e a punta),  rosso, fatto a mano e regalato.

Rosso perché sin dal Medioevo questo colore indica la vittoria sul nemico, fatto a mano perché l’artigiano deve trasferirci le proprie influenza positive.

How couldn’t we write a little bit about Naples? To start we would like to tell you something about one of its symbols, ‘o curnicello, the lucky horn.

The relationship between Neapolitans and superstition is well explained by a statement of Eduardo de Filippo: Being superstitious is ignorant, but not being brings bad luck and it’s demonstrated by the fact that the most popular good luck charm is from Naples!

The superstition about ‘o curniciello comes from prehistory when it was common to thing that animals’ force was related to their horns.

Horns were considered both symbol of power both of belonging and divine descent and for centuries famous warriors (as Alessandro Magno) used pose wearing them.

Common people, impressed by those warriors who were supposed to have divine powers, started producing lucky charm shaped as one or two horns using poor raw materials as wood or terracotta.

Years by years they became popular lucky charms and of course in Italy appears the first red lucky horn.
During the Middle Ages those amulets became popular all over Europe and Neapolitan jewelers were famous for the production of necklaces and bracelets decorated with many lucky horns.

To be effective it should be hard, sinuous, pointy, red, hand-made and a gift.
Red because from Middle Ages this color has been the symbol of a victory over enemies, hand-made because the artisan could transfer its positive energy on it.

Come sono fatte le carte napoletane

Come tutti sanno, le carte napoletane non sono utilizzate solo a Napoli, ma in numerose zone del centro-sud.

Il mazzo di carte ha 4 semi e 40 carte, suddivise in dieci carte per ogni seme.

I semi utilizzati sono quelli spagnoli, che caratterizzano tutti gli altri stili regionali centro-meridionali (carte siciliane, sarde, piacentine e romagnole). 

I semi sono dunque le coppe, i bastoni, i denari e le spade. Ogni seme ha dieci carte: le prime sette con i semi nello stesso numero della carta (ad esempio quattro spade per la carta numero 4 del seme delle spade) e le ultime tre con figura (fante, cavaliere e re). Il fante è l'otto, il cavaliere (detto comunemente cavallo) è il nove e il re è il dieci. Le carte non hanno indici, cioè non hanno un numero che ne indichi il valore.

Non tutti forse sanno che la prima testimonianza scritta che le descrive, risale al 1577, quando il vicereame impose una tassa di un carlino per ogni paio di carte da gioco.

Si stima che venissero prodotte 58.000 carte da gioco nel Regno di Napoli e che di queste 42.000 fossero vendute nella sola Napoli.

Le carte erano la voce del popolo perché costavano poche e tutti potevano produrle.

Osservandole un po’ si nota che, le caratteristiche grafiche che le contraddistinguono sono:

• Immagini non particolarmente elaborate, meno ricche di dettagli dello stile piacentino.
• Figure intere per il fante, il cavallo ed il re.
• Abiti ottocenteschi, che ci parlano dell'epoca in cui il mazzo ha assunto le caratteristiche che ancora mantiene.
• Asso di denari nella forma di aquila a due teste.
• Seme di denari interamente giallo, le carte piacentine che hanno un disco centrale rosso.
• Bastoni rappresentati come mazze di legno con una striscia di foglie, negli stili del nord Italia sono aste di metallo ricche di decorazioni.
• Il fante ha fattezze femminili, è, infatti, detto comunemente “la donna”.

As everybody knows, Neapolitan cards are used not only in Naples but in many areas of central and southern Italy.

The bunch has 4 suits and 40 cards divided into 10 cards for each suits.

Used suits are the Spanish ones and they characterize every central and southern regional playing cards (Sicilian, Sardinian, Piacentine and Romagnole ones).

Suits are: swords, cups, coins and clubs. Each suit has 10 cards: the first seven are the same numbers as in the cards (for example fours swords for the cards number four of the sword’s suite) and the last three are face cards (knave, knight, king). Knave is the number eight, Knight the number nine and King the number ten. Face cards do not have numbers representing their value.

Perhaps, not everybody knows that the first written testimony describing Neapolitan cards goes up to 1577, when the government was asking a tax for each pair of playing cards.

It is supposed that in the Kingdom of Naples were produced 58.000 playing cards among which 42.000 were sold in Naples.

Playing cards where the voice of the people, because they were cheap and because everybody could produce them.

A deep look on their graphic show that their hallmarks are:

·      Not too detailed images, less details than in Piacenza cards.

·      Whole figures for Knave, Knot and King.

·      Nineteenth-century clothing, representing the era in which they were standardized.

·      Ace of clubs in the shape of an eagle with two heads.

·      All-yellow suit of clubs, differently from Piacenza cards which has a central red disc.

·      Clubs represented as wooden clubs with a strip of leaves, in the northern Italian styles they are are metal rods rich of decorations

·      Knave has feminine characteristics, in fact it is called the “women”.
